UK ETA vs UK Visitor Visa
The key differences between the digital UK ETA and a traditional UK visa — and how to tell which one you need.

What is the UK ETA?
The UK ETA is a digital travel permission for eligible travellers of qualifying nationalities travelling for permitted short visits. It involves a digital application, is linked to your passport, and is designed for eligible visa-exempt visitors.
When is a UK visa required instead?
A UK visa may be required when:
- Your nationality is not ETA eligible
- Your travel purpose requires a visa
- Your intended stay exceeds ETA visitor permissions
- You intend to work, settle, marry or undertake another visa-required activity
Not sure which you need?
Use our eligibility checker to see whether the UK ETA scheme generally applies to your nationality and travel purpose, or contact our support team for guidance. For activities that fall outside the ETA scheme, consult official UK Government visa and immigration guidance.
